Tree Studies 2 and 3 by GenerallySpeaking Tree Studies 2 and 3 by GenerallySpeaking
So my AP Art summer assignments required me to do 3 oil pastel studies of trees. At first, I was really frustrated with the media and all, but I got a hang of the technique. I had a limited supply of colors, so the bark was the most difficult to do, because the brown oil pastel I used was of a cheaper brand and it just felt like a giant crayon.

I must tell you that you really succeeded in your assignment. They just look awesome! I love the bark, the leaves and the brighter highlights in them. I love the feel like the left tree is banded by a gust of wind and the right one has some secondary truncks coming front really low in the tree.

Thanks! I wished I could use some more colors to show the depth of the leaves, but I guess I got tree shape pretty close!

Hum, yah, a little bit of black mixed in dark green and may be a bright yellow mixed with bright green. It's what I did here: [link] and I think for a night scene, the leaves were a success. Check it in the bigger version, please :)

Oooh. I tried the same technique except I tried using red for the darker green because they are complementary colors. Instead, I just got red...

Hum, I think with pastels, it,s just by experimenting different mixes of colour that you will be able to do what you want with it...
